Interactive Motion Tracking Installation Inspired by Apple’s Classic iPod campaign

-
Type: Interactive Installation / Motion Tracking / Real-Time Video
-
Environment: Museum Exhibit
-
Role: Interactive Exhibit Design, Creative Direction, System Design, Execution
Concept
Apple’s iPod campaign was never really about the product.
It was about movement, music, and identity.
The opportunity here was to take something people already recognize and bring it to life. Instead of watching the silhouette, you become it.
The focus wasn’t on recreating the campaign exactly. It was on capturing the same energy in a way that works in a live environment.
Experience
You walk into frame and your silhouette appears instantly, larger than life on the wall, with iPod and earbuds attached.
A camera captures your movement in real time and reduces you to a high-contrast silhouette. That silhouette is placed onto a bold color background, with white earbuds and a device layered in to match the original visual style.
The earbuds wire is elastic and responsive, which adds a physical layer to the interaction. People naturally start playing with it, moving the iPod from their hip to their hands, switching sides, and using it as part of their movement.
There’s no onboarding. No instructions.
People test it at first, then commit once they see themselves on screen. The real-time feedback makes it clear how it works, so the interaction teaches itself.
The system supports multiple participants at once, assigning distinct color environments to each person. This allows for shared interaction without confusion, and encourages group participation.
Each session is automatically recorded and turned into a short video that can be accessed on-site. What starts as a quick interaction usually turns into something people repeat or share.
Execution
The system combines camera-based motion tracking with real-time video processing and compositing.
-
Input: Live camera feed via ZED Camera
-
Processing: Silhouette extraction, Augmented Reality elements and background compositing in real time using Touch Designer
-
Output: Live display + recorded video clip
Everything is tuned for speed and reliability. The interaction only works if the response feels instant.
DKS Design led the concept, interaction design, and system behavior, working with development and hardware partners to bring it together. Final adjustments were made on-site to refine responsiveness, framing, and output quality in a public setting.
