Concept
From the Macintosh and MacPaint to the iPad and Apple Pencil, Apple’s products have helped make creative expression more accessible to more people.
The Community Art Wall was designed to celebrate that idea.
Rather than showcasing what others have created, the installation invites visitors to become part of the experience themselves. Every drawing, doodle, message, and sketch contributes to a larger artwork that evolves throughout the day.
The goal wasn’t to create perfect art.
It was to create a space where participation becomes the content.
Experience
Visitors create artwork using iPads positioned throughout the exhibit.
Once submitted, their drawing is reviewed, incorporated into the system, and added to one of several large-scale animated murals displayed on a massive LED wall.
As new artwork is added throughout the day, the murals continue to evolve. Characters move, scenes change, and compositions grow as more visitors contribute their ideas.
Some visitors spend time creating detailed illustrations. Others contribute quick sketches, messages, or playful doodles. Every approved submission becomes part of a larger living artwork that reflects the creativity of the exhibit’s visitors.
The result is an experience where guests don’t just view the exhibit. They leave a lasting mark on it.
Execution
The installation combines custom iPad software, AI-assisted content moderation, real-time content management, and large-scale LED display technology.
-

-
Processing: AI-assisted content review, artwork management, and mural placement
-
Output: Animated community murals displayed on a large-format LED wall
-
Interaction: Create, submit, and watch artwork become part of a larger composition
-
Users: Unlimited participation throughout the day
The primary challenge was balancing open creativity with a public-facing exhibit environment.
Visitors needed the freedom to create whatever they wanted while ensuring the artwork displayed on the LED wall remained appropriate for audiences of all ages.
To accomplish this, an AI-assisted moderation layer was integrated into the submission process. This allows the system to identify potentially inappropriate content while preserving the immediacy of the experience.
A custom iPad application was developed and published to support the drawing experience, creating a simple and familiar interface for visitors while allowing artwork to move seamlessly from device to display.
The murals themselves were designed as living compositions rather than static galleries. New artwork is continuously integrated into animated scenes, ensuring the display evolves as participation grows.
DKS Design led the concept development, interaction design, software planning, visitor experience strategy, content flow, and overall system behavior, creating an installation that turns individual creativity into a collaborative and ever-changing work of art.
